How We Research

Updated on

Every guide on ChummyCorner starts with one question: will this sofa work for the room and the people who sit on it? For our sofa and sectional guides, that means your floor plan, your doorways and the way your household uses the couch.

Here is how we answer it.

1. We start with the room

The size of your room, the wall you plan to use and the doorway and stairs it has to get through decide which sofas work. A sectional that fits the wall can still be too deep for a small room.

We look at overall width and depth, the chaise side and the number of seats. When your space limits the choice, we say what to measure.

2. We compare specs and features

We look at seat depth and height, the number of modules, fabric, frame material and how the sections connect. We also note box count and box size, storage, and the pull-out size on sleeper models.

Makers describe their cushion fill, fabric and frame in their own words, so we name the brand for every claim. We also note the warranty terms the maker lists.

3. We look at buyer feedback

We read through what buyers report after using a sofa. We look for patterns, like cushions that sag, sections that shift apart, foam that takes days to fill out or hard assembly.

One angry review doesn't sink a product. A pattern does.

4. We score each product

Our score weighs specs, features and buyer feedback against what you're shopping for. A sofa that's great for one living room may score lower in a guide written for a small apartment.

Scores spread out on purpose. A 10 is rare.

5. We keep pages up to date

Sofa listings change often, and many boxed couches look nearly alike across brands. We check each model name, and we only link new units, never renewed or used ones.

When we update a guide, the "Updated on" date at the top changes with it.

What our picks are not

Our picks are research, not lab tests. We don't claim to have assembled or sat on every sofa in our guides.

We make no promises about comfort or how long a sofa will last. For weight limits and assembly, follow the maker's manual, and check the maker's recall page before you buy.

Our guides don't replace the maker's instructions. We can't promise that any sofa will fit through your door or your room.
